Fire engulfs Bellandur lake, this time from trash heap

After falling prey to toxic froth, the lake became a victim of toxic smoke, courtesy the chemicals and debris dumped near the lake.

Yet again, Bellandur lake caught fire when the debris which was being burnt around the lake fell in the waterbody. "The fumes have reached till Iblur flyover". Even fire department personnel found themselves in a perplexing situation on Thursday evening after seeing dense smoke emerging from the middle of the lake. According to a report in Times Now, the lake bed was on fire for more than three hours on Thursday evening after illegal dumping of debris. An ambulance had been called in as a precautionary measure when the fire erupted around 5:50 pm on Thursday.

They suspect that the fire originated in the thick layer of hyacinth in the lake.

While fires at Bellandur lake, owing to the deadly effluents in the lake is nothing new, this time it was a pile of burning garbage that resulted in fire in the lake.

Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Chairman Lakshman said notices have been issued to BBMP, Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewage Board and other agencies to stop the dumping.

The froth had formed due to chemical deposits from detergents and cleaners, which had flown into the lake from the sewage pipes.
