Some saw the detention as the opening salvo in an attack on former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, while federal authorities suggested it was simply a routine exercise of their authority.
The 2012 Obama administration program provides temporary protection from deportation and work permits to 750,000 young immigrants brought to the U.S.by their families as children. His work permit should have been valid for at least another year, according to his attorneys. They were looking for his father, who has an order to be deported from the country. "Daniel Ramirez Medina should be released immediately".
ICE spokeswoman Rose Richeson said Ramirez was a "self-admitted gang member" who was arrested during "an operation targeting a prior-deported felon", but declined to elaborate on the matter.
A Seattle area man detained by immigration agents despite his participation in a federal program to protect those brought to the U.S. illegally as children admitted to having gang ties, the U.S. Justice Department said in court documents filed Thursday.
Over 680 people were arrested last week as part of a five-day "enforcement surge" carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Five judges appointed to the Supreme Court after a long wait
The fresh appointments will take the number of Supreme Court judges to 28, still three short of the court's full strength. In April past year , the collegium had transferred Justice Joseph to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on medical grounds.
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: To me, it's one of the most hard subjects I have because you have these incredible kids in many cases, not in all cases.
"The government induced people to apply to DACA by promising to keep their information confidential, and I now worry that the Trump administration will use that very information to deport these individuals who were brought to the USA as children", he said. "They shouldn't be very anxious", Trump said of the "Dreamers".
His administration continues to approve new applications and renew existing DACA permits, said Luis Cortes Romero, another of Ramirez Medina's lawyers and a Dreamer himself.
The Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, which is helping represent Ramirez, sought to alleviate those fears Tuesday. They're afraid to go to the courthouse, take the bus or walk downtown. La Paz means "Peace" in Spanish and is also the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, where Ramirez was born.
Medina's lawyers say his lawsuit, seeking his immediate release, is the first of its kind challenging the detention of a Dreamer.
Brexit: UK could be 'more vulnerable to terrorist attacks'
He will say there has been no "real discussion as to why and when Brexit doesn't affect the immigration people most care about". But pro-leave campaigners last night slammed Blair, saying he is trying to get back into politics by lying to the public.
The officers had arrived at the home to arrest Ramirez's father, though it was unclear why, according to the Reuters report.
Ramirez was picked up along with his father in Seattle, Washington.
After the arrest, according to the complaint, the agents asked Ramirez, "Are you legally here?" They hope that Ramirez's arrest is an isolated incident and does not indicate that the Department of Homeland Security is proceeding in a new direction when it comes to individuals brought to the United States as undocumented children. "This young man was carefully vetted by the Obama administration, cleared background checks and it was determined he was not a priority for removal, and, in fact, it is a benefit for him and people like him to be able to live and work here". She said the arrests took place across the street and not on church property.
The case has raised questions: Was Ramirez's detention, as the government says, a routine arrest of someone who posed a threat to the US because of his alleged gang ties? "Did you see that?' And they say, 'No, somebody else told me.' And that's when we see it's not real, the ICE activity in the community", Sosa said.
Alphabet's Project Loon internet balloon effort just made a major breakthrough
Before, the plan was to have Loon balloons spread across the globe, with one balloon replacing another that drifts off. Loon says that balloons will now make small loops over a land mass, instead of circumnavigating the whole planet.
