Anger as Brazilian club signs goalkeeper convicted over ex-girlfriend's death

Bruno de Souza is the latest player signed by second-tier Brazilian side Boa Esporte.

A month later it emerged that Bruno - with help of a number of people, including his wife, another former lover and a teenage cousin - had lured Samudio to his home.

Samudio had fallen pregnant with the married Bruno's child following a sexual encounter in 2009.

Bruno reportedly watched as former cop Marcos Santos brutally tortured Eliza before strangling her with a tie in front of her son. She went missing shortly after filing her lawsuit.

Bruno, as he is commonly known, said he would now "concentrate on (his) work".

Edson Moreira, a detective who investigated the case, said: 'His acts were nearly impossible to describe without breaking down - images from the worst nightmare you could imagine'. The baby was found a few weeks later in the care of friends of Bruno's former wife. DNA tests later proved the footballer's paternity.

In 2010, Bruno Fernandes was a successful goalkeeper with first-division club Flamengo and had been tipped to play for Brazil in the 2014 Fifa World Cup finals.
