Taipei 101, Carrefour, hotels observe Earth Hour by turning off lights

To mark Earth Hour on Saturday, Qatar Airways switched off the lights at its corporate headquarters between 8:30 and 9:30pm in an effort to encourage communities and individuals to come together to highlight the importance of combatting climate change.

Pakistan will join 170 countries on Saturday to observe the 10th Earth Hour by switching off unnecessary lights in a pledge to save the planet.

Earth Hour is the world's largest grassroots movement to combat climate change. The campaign was first launched in 2007 in the Australian city of Sydney, when the lights were turned off all across the city including Sydney Opera House.

Instead of a one-size-fits all approach, this policy will take the entirety of a driver's time using Uber into account. In the past, Uber usually takes the rider's word when they claim that someone else took their ride.

The "Earth Hour" movement was globally accepted and celebrated, each year over 172 countries and over 7000 cities shut down the electricity of landmark monuments to participate and raise awareness!

The Earth Hour travels this year from Samoa (independent country) to The Cook Islands (another independent country) across the worldwide date line in the Pacific Ocean.

Landmarks from the Eifel Tower in Paris to the Empire State Building in NY to the Sydney Opera House will shut off their lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday.

Starting 8:30PM local time, people are encouraged to turn off their lights, power down their computers, kill the heaters, and stay at home with family and friends. These include, India Gate, Gateway of India, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Red Fort among many others.

The annual event has aimed to focus public attention on the issue of climate change and save a few megawatts in the process.

Hundreds supported the Earth Hour campaign at the switch-off event held at the SM by the Bay, Mall of Asia Complex.
