Washington State Moves to Stop Trump's New Travel Ban

Saudi Arabia, the country from which most of the 9/11 hijackers were citizens of, is not listed as one of the banned countries.

The previous order, which was blocked by a federal court, sparked confusion at airports and mass protests.

The events happened a day after Hawaii launched its own lawsuit, and Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson said NY state also asked to join his state's legal effort.

But if advance reports are correct (and the order is properly followed by airlines and border agents), it won't cause visible chaos within America, or for people already here. The order does not apply to travelers who already have visas, unlike the initial order.

Trump, under 8 U.S. Code § 1182 has the right to suspend visas of individuals who pose a risk to the nation's security. It keeps a 90-day ban on travel to the United States by citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, but excludes Iraq and applies the restriction only to new visa applicants. The claim also argues that the order is in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

"Accordingly, the court also declines to resolve the apparent dispute between the parties concerning the applicability of the court's injunctive order to the New Executive Order until such time as an amended complaint that addresses the New Executive Order is properly before the court", Robart wrote.

The governor's order barred the Washington State Patrol and state agencies with arrest powers from detaining people who are in the United States illegally but have not broken other laws. The state of Hawaii has filed its own lawsuit, challenging Trump's new order.

"Although the new order appears to be significantly scaled back, it still sends a awful message to the world, to Muslim-Americans, and to minority communities across the country, without any demonstrable benefit to national security", Herring said.

After President Trump's immigration ban for seven Muslim-majority countries went into effect and was soon ruled unconstitutional by a federal court, the administration now has an updated policy but with a few changes. Refugees will also be subject to those higher standards, and the USA will accept only 50,000 refugees in the current fiscal year - half of what the government originally planned to accept under the quota set by the Obama administration last fall.

All of these provisions were in the original executive order, and they're not much changed in the new version.
