Aaron Hernandez Kills Himself In Prison, Officials Say

He tried to jam the cell door to prevent guards from opening it and hanged himself with a bed sheet tied to a window, Fallon said. According to WBZ-TV, the CBS Affiliate in Boston, when Hernandez was found on Wednesday, he had the words "John 3:16" written on his forehead.

The Massachusetts Department of Corrections said in a statement that officers found the 27-year-old hanging in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley at 3:05 a.m.

He died nearly exactly two years after he was sentenced to life without parole for murdering a semi-pro football player in 2013 and five days after he was acquitted of double murder in a separate Boston killing in 2012.

That verse says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".

The prison is in State Senator Jamie Eldridge's district, who during a surprise visit in December said he heard many say there is a need for mental health services, especially those in single cells like Hernandez.

Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez and he was transported to UMASS Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.by a physician at the hospital. Hernandez was serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2015 of the 2013 death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.

The one-time Patriots tight end was in a solitary cell in general population housing and had not been considered at risk of suicide.

Suicides accounted for about 6 percent of state prison deaths in that period.

Hernandez's family and legal team said they were "shocked" by his death, calling for a transparent and thorough investigation.

The civil case against Hernandez is also likely to be dropped, he said.

It was here at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Facility that former Patriot's player Aaron Hernandez took his life.

Walker told The Boston Globe on Wednesday that MA had a high suicide rate among prisoners 10 years ago but that the state has worked on "suicide-proofing" its facilities. "Aaron was looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence", Baez said. But his death could vacate that conviction, according to attorney Randy Chapman, legal editor for NBC Boston and necn.

His death was "a shocking and sad end to a very tragic series of events that has negatively impacted a number of families", said Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, who prosecuted Hernandez in the Lloyd case.

Hernandez died five days after a jury acquitted him in the 2012 shooting deaths of two men whom prosecutors alleged he gunned down after one accidentally spilled a drink on him at a Boston nightclub.
