Pentagon officials say the USA commander in Afghanistan who ordered use of the "mother of all bombs" didn't need President Donald Trump's approval. It was first tested in 2003, but the Nangarhar strike represented the first time the huge weapon has been used in combat. But that changed on Thursday, when the GBU-43 aka the "mother of all bombs" was dropped on a complex of underground tunnels and caves used by ISIS fighters in eastern Afghanistan, close to the country's border with Pakistan.
U.S. drops Mother of all bombs on IS militants in Afghanistan.
The United States dropped the largest non-nuclear device, called "mother of all bombs" in an area in Afghanistan to target militants, but it also left an impact on the other side of border, causing damage to the buildings in Kurram Agency. "As a result of the bombing, key Daesh (IS) hideouts and a deep tunnel complex were destroyed and 36 IS fighters were killed", the defence ministry said in a statement. "A year ago a drone strike targeted a house next to mine, but this time it felt like the heavens were falling", he explained.

This is a big-league weapon for a small-league enemy.
The target of the massive bomb was an Islamic State command centre hidden in a mountainous area that was hard to destroy with conventional bombs. That apparently reflects President Donald Trump's vow for a more aggressive campaign against the group. It was all but defeated.

The MOAB is believed to be the deadliest non-nuclear weapon designed.
Some have suggested the decision to use the powerful munition may have been "disproportionate" and has done little to alter circumstances.
"If big bombs were the solution we would be the most secure place on earth today".
