DuBose Porter, chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party, said the 6th District offers the flawless setting for state and national Democrats to prove their momentum heading into 2018.

Republicans, including the president, wanted to ensure Democrats wouldn't be able to use the election as a referendum on the Trump administration. 50 percent was needed to avoid a runoff, so Ossoff will face Republican Karen Handel on June 20.

Late Tuesday night, President Donald Trump tweeted his congratulations to Georgia Republicans and celebrated a victory. Republicans had to spend millions of dollars to keep Ossoff from an outright win in spite of a crowded field that made it hard for anyone to come close to 50%. However, Ossoff received a majority of the East Cobb vote in only a few precincts in or near Marietta city limits.

Republican Karen Handel has kept her distance from Trump.

Ossoff's campaign was boosted by the support of numerous celebrities, including from Star Trek actor George Takei and anti-Trump talk show host Chelsea Handler, the latter of whom donated to the young Democrat and used her almost 7 million-strong Twitter following to urge Georgia voters to turn out. It is also probably worth noting that the 6th district candidate who tried hardest to brand himself as a Trump loyalist, Bob Gray, finished a distant third.

As the Washington Examiner writes, the race for the congressional seat that Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price vacated is seen as an indicator of how the 2018 congressional elections could go.

In several tweets on Tuesday, he said Ossoff was "very weak on crime and illegal immigration, bad for jobs and wants higher taxes" and urged Republicans to vote to force a run-off.

Ossoff, a former congressional staffer and documentary filmmaker, ran on a pledge to "Make Trump Furious".

Ossoff was backed by major Democratic PACs and raised $8.3 million this quarter, mostly from outside groups.

Sanders was then asked if Ossoff is a progressive.

At 30-years-old, Ossoff rose from near-obscurity to a favored position Tuesday on the back of strong fundraising and endorsements from celebrities and prominent Democrats, including his former boss, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga. and Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga. who represents the state's fifth district, just to the south of the sixth.

Handel moved quickly to unite her fractured party, drawing immediate endorsements from some of her fellow GOP candidates and national party leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan.
