The soil at the West Calumet housing complex in East Chicago, Indiana, contains high levels of lead and arsenic, putting all residents in danger.

"He categorically denied that they had any plans to do that", said Thomas Frank, one of five East Chicago residents who met with Pruitt on Wednesday. Pruitt was scheduled to to tour the complex where roughly 1,000 people were ordered evacuated because of lead contamination.

The labor union representing Environmental Protection Agency workers at a regional office reportedly on the chopping block are asking for a meeting with the agency's administrator this week. Pruitt said the EPA will take steps to restore the public's confidence, but he did not offer specifics.
