Although Hernandez was already serving a life sentence without parole for killing Lloyd, his attorneys were hopeful that Hernandez had a chance to be released from prison soon because the 2013 conviction was being automatically reviewed by the state's highest court.

Officials said Hernandez was found hanging in his cell by corrections officers at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley around 3:05 a.m.

After he was found, "lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez and he was transported to UMass-Memorial Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.by a physician at the hospital", Fallon said.

Investigators are also probing whether the disgraced National Football League star smoked synthetic cannabis such as K2 or "spice" before his death in his single cell in a general population unit.

Hernandez also tried to jam the cell door shut to prevent guards from opening it, according to Correction Department spokesman Christopher Fallon.

He said everyone has the right to appeal and now that Hernandez is dead, it means he doesn't have a way of exercising that right.

Jose Baez, Hernandez's lead attorney in his recent double murder trial, is calling for an investigation into his client's death.

Last week, Hernandez was acquitted in the 2012 drive-by shootings of two men in Boston.

Baez, who has said he will conduct his own investigation into what happened, said he would not accept the conclusion that the death was a suicide until after a full inquiry. He said Hernandez's family has also commissioned its own independent autopsy.

The team released him in June 2013, shortly after he was arrested for the murder of Lloyd, a semi-professional football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee.
