China's official broadcaster CCTV quoted Xi telling Trump that China strongly opposed North Korea's nuclear weapons program and hoped "all parties will exercise restraint and avoid aggravating the situation".

In response, China's Communist Party-affiliated Global Times newspaper wrote in a commentary that "no matter how many articles KCNA publishes, whatever future measures North Korea takes, Beijing's stance wouldn't be affected". Adding to the heightened tensions, North Korea detained a US citizen on Saturday as he attempted to leave the country.
