The "football mad" former Tottenham boss, 70, has been hired by Birmingham's Hong Kong-based owners in a desperate bid to avoid relegation from the Championship following Gianfranco Zola's resignation with just three games remaining.

Zola recorded just two victories during his time at St Andrews', which came to an end on Monday, after a 2-0 defeat to Burton Albion left the Blues just three-points above the relegation zone.

Birmingham's season began promisingly under new Derby manager Gary Rowett, who had taken them into contention for promotion before unexpectedly being sacked and replaced by Zola.

Harry Redknapp will take charge of Birmingham's last three games of the season.

I got a phone call last night from the people at Birmingham.

"The players have put in the club in the position they're in - you can blame who you like, they've obviously not performed", said the ex-Portsmouth, West Ham and Tottenham boss.

"It's not easy. All I can do is try and install some confidence - two wins in 22 games is there for all to see".
