Hernandez had renewed sense of hope after double-murder acquittal, source says

Jose Baez, the attorney who secured a not guilty verdict in the recent double-murder trial of Aaron Hernandez, says he will examine how the former National Football League star and convicted murderer died after MA authorities announced he committed suicide in prison Wednesday morning. The suicide comes just days after being acquitted of a double murder.

Corrections officers said they found Hernandez hanging in his cell at 3:05 a.m.at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley. The 27-year-old was rushed to UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Before taking his own life, Hernandez reportedly blocked his cell door from the inside - jamming it with some of his personal items.

Last week, Hernandez was acquitted in the 2012 drive-by shootings of two men in Boston.

He died nearly exactly two years after he was sentenced to life without parole for murdering a semi-pro football player in 2013 and five days after he was acquitted of double murder in a separate Boston killing in 2012.

As the jury was deliberating last week, cameras spied Hernandez blowing kisses to the young daughter he fathered with fiancée Shayanna Jenkins.

Martin Healy, chief legal counsel of the Massachusetts Bar Association, says Hernandez's death opens the door for his conviction for Lloyd's murder to be quashed.

Hayes said in an e-mail that he was "confident that the agency and its health care provider will conduct comprehensive investigations into Mr. Hernandez's death".

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, Jr. said that detectives assigned to his office and the Department of Corrections are investigating Hernandez's death.
