Support for marijuana legalisation has increased steadily since 2013, crossing to majority support in 2014.

Support was highest among Democrats and independents, with a respective 68 and 64 percent saying they backed legalizing the drug, according to poll results. According to CBS, "women are now as much in favor of legal marijuana as men are; in previous years they were less so".

Among those who think marijuana should be illegal, only half think the federal government should be involved with the states.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has vowed to enforce federal anti-marijuana laws, even in those states where it is legal.

"Our survey found that most cannabis users feel that if alcohol and tobacco can be effectively regulated on a national level, then marijuana should be included among that list as well", Jan Verleur, CEO and co-founder of VMR, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. As such, 53 percent of people in the CBS poll think alcohol is more harmful than marijuana.

The majority of Democrats and Independents believe marijuana should be legal, while Republicans are divided.
