Participating organizations are trying to install at least 250 smoke alarms throughout the day, and in some residential areas volunteers will be going door-to-door. As MPB's Alexis Ware reports, alarms are helping to reduce fire-related deaths.

The Watertown Fire Department has also partnered with a local Home Depot to provide smoke alarms if they discover a lack of functioning smoke alarms when they are out on a call.

Vision 20/20 is a national project that is dedicated to providing national strategies in fire prevention across the country. Since the start of the Smoke Alarm Program, Mississippi has dropped to number five in fire deaths. In addition to installing smoke alarms, the volunteer teams will talk safety tips and help families make personalized fire escape plans for their homes. Most people in a fire death do not die from the fire itself, they die from inhalation of smoke. When you inhale two or three breaths of smoke which is a silent killer you can't breath. Chaney says in the past eight years, the number of those deaths has been reduced by almost 36 percent.

"In the past 10 years Oktibbeha County has had 21 fire deaths out of those 21 fire deaths 15 of them had no working smoke alarms".
