Matthew Stafford would like new contract with Lions

The Lions returned to Allen Park this week to begin their offseason training program, and Stafford says his finger is healed and ready to go for the 2017 season. By all accounts, Stafford wants to stay, and negotiations are under way. This marked the last win of the season for the Lions and while most discredit the injury as a reason for the poor finish, it was devastating timing.

As for his future, Stafford said he hasn't anxious too much about his contract talks. He is still just 29 years old and is in the prime of his career. He does recognize, though, that other teams in the league have found ways to pay premium sums for high-level quarterbacks and still manage to field winning rosters. "The salary cap, and all that stuff, is as malleable as you want it to be".

"So I think you just go and try to make a good decision not only for the player but the team and go from there". Stafford was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. He has helped the team reach the playoffs three times, including last season, but has not won a playoff game for a franchise that has only one postseason victory since 1957.
