McDonald's 20-year-old dipping sauce sells for almost $15000 on Ebay

In 1998, McDonald's launched a short-lived promotional Szechuan sauce to coincide with the release of the Disney film Mulan.

But paying $14,700 for just one packet (which, to be fair, also includes a "Wasabi favored sauce") seems more than a little bit absurd - especially considering a whole case of the stuff recently went for a much more reasonable sounding $400.

Time reports that one Rick And Morty fan is now on the hook for $14,700 for an unopened container of McDonald's Mulan SzeChuan teriyaki dipping sauce someone found while cleaning their auto.

"I just bought a really old auto, while cleaning it I found a packet of this sauce", the listing stated. Then, earlier this month, an episode of the cult sci-fi cartoon Rick and Morty lobbied McDonalds for the long-dead promo sauce's return, filling its season 3 premiere with references to it. Turns out it was.

"Nine more seasons until I get that dipping Szechuan sauce, or 97 more years, Morty!".

There were 187 bids on the sauce until the clock finally ran out with the $14,700 bid as the victor. The end of the episode sees Rick make an epic rant to Morty about the sauce (scroll below to watch).

So not only is this sauce nearly 20 years old, but it's been exposed to the elements from inside somebody's vehicle for god knows how long, as well. He adds that getting his hands on the sauce is his personal "series arc" - even if it takes nine seasons, Morty. Plus, the timing is ideal: Mulan will be remade into a live-action film next year, and it's pretty clear that bringing back this promotional offer would be well-received.
