Norwegian Air takes fares fight to Asia with new London-Singapore route

The airline intends to launch a four-times weekly service, and increase it to five-times weekly during the Northern winter season from October to March the following year, said Changi Airport Group (CAG) in a press release on Thursday (April 20).

Norwegian will launch a new route from London Gatwick to Singapore this winter as the airline's growing low-priced long-haul United Kingdom network expands into Asia for the first time.

With the launch of this new service, the number of weekly flights from Singapore to London will increase to 502, translating into an 11% increase of one-way seats weekly to 1,720. And the airfare is the best part: Some flights in the airline's LowFare bracket are available for $179.

But there's much more to Singapore than it's fancy airports.

Starting in June, the Norwegian low-priced carrier will operate flights using its new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aeroplanes to destinations in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland from its bases in Orange County, New York, Hartford, and Providence. "As our 50-strong world route network expands, so too does Gatwick's reputation on the global stage as a strong, dependable option for worldwide travel". More than 1.2 million passengers travelled on the route in 2016. Norwegian has been awarded the "World's best low-priced long-haul airline" for two consecutive years at the SkyTrax World Airline Awards.

A fare comparison by The Independent for the first day of the new service, returning a week later, found fares of £474 on British Airways and £499 on Singapore Airlines, compared with £380 on Norwegian.
