Policy change hits United Airlines in light of recent passenger fiasco

A United Express Embraer E175.UnitedOn Friday, United Airlines announced that all crews traveling on board its aircraft should be booked 60 minutes ahead of the time of departure. The goal is to avoid having to find a seat for a crew member after all passengers have already boarded. Schmerin confirmed the authenticity of the published email. United Airlines has offered the couple flying credit as compensation, CBC reports.

It's worth noting that this change doesn't mean a passenger couldn't be bumped off a flight due to overbooking.

The airline made it clear that it will also no longer ask law enforcement to remove passengers that do not pose a security threat. "We have committed to our customers and our employees that we are going to fix what's broken so this never happens again".

Almost a week since the incident, United is still dealing with the backlash.

"No one should ever be mistreated this way", United CEO Oscar Munoz said in a statement earlier this week, his most contrite apology yet as details emerged about the incident. When the plane landed in Calgary he was taken to a hospital, and later released after being cleared of any medical issue.

United Airlines said in an internal memo that the policy "is so the denied boarding process in an oversell situation may be implemented in a gate or lobby area and not on board the aircraft".

Thing is, United's new rule change is somewhat redundant.
