Arsene Wenger has revealed that he was seeking defensive stability as he selected a 3-4-3 Arsenal formation, their first back three since the 90s, for the 2-1 win over Middlesbrough on Monday night.
Wenger's side are now in sixth position in England's top flight, with seven points separating them from the top four as Man City sit in fourth on 64 points.
"We have to win every game to have a chance to get into the top four and starting tonight", Wenger explained.

After the match, Wenger revealed the reasoning behind his decision to start with a back three of Holding, Gabriel, and Laurent Koscielny: "I felt that we were recently a bit vulnerable defensively and to give a bit more reassurance to the team".
Trump risks massively increasing deficit with tax-cut plan

"That shows you that even at my age, you can change", Wenger said after the game when explaining his tactical switch.
"Sometimes when your team lacks confidence, just to have something new to believe helps them to focus".
"The opponent had more of the ball that we're used to - when we lost against West Brom and Crystal Palace we had 70% possession and today we had a bit less".
Arsenal went back in front in the 71st minute through Mesut Ozil. "We didn't give any chances away, we were quite solid".
"It didn't matter how we won, we had to go out there and get back to basics", Wenger added.

The fight to push ISIS out of the city, the second-largest in Iraq, has been raging since mid-October 2016. More than 300 square miles have been cleared since west Mosul operations began mid-February, he said.
"The end of the season will come very quickly and it is up to us to finish strongly". You perform on the football pitch because you love to play football'.
- Arsenal picked up only their second win in their last nine away league games (D1 L6), though both wins came against teams now in the relegation zone (also Swansea City). "We need to keep fighting for them".
When asked about the importance of the result, he said: "Yeah, of course".
The Chilean's fine strike also means he's now scored five direct free kicks during his Premier League career, with only Thierry Henry - who scored 12 - having managed more during his time with Arsenal.
