Everton manager Ronald Koeman claims that his side "controlled" the Merseyside derby against Liverpool despite falling to a 3-1 defeat at Anfield.

After nearly 20-years of coming up short, Everton losing out to Liverpool at Anfield is the new cliché - the city is red and there's no reason to second guess it anymore.

He added: "From both sides I saw tackles that were maybe more than a yellow".

The Everton manager cited the Bosnian after he remonstrated with officials for their failure to send Barkley off. Barkley was booked for the challenge but he was already treading a unsafe line by that point, having escaped censorship for previous tackles.

Coutinho's goal and trickery beforehand will come as a relief to Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool faithful, with the playmaker's form dropping off since his return from injury.

Will Team USA be in uniform?

Everton FC didn't' even win a single match in Liverpool home since 1999, which is a great advantage for the home team today.

Uruguayan defender Miguel Britos scored his first goal for Watford to secure a deserved 1-0 victory over Sunderland at Vicarage Road and deepen the visitors' relegation woes.

Victory takes Klopp's men above Manchester City into third place, but more importantly, they are now seven points clear of Manchester United in fifth. A sixth-minute foul on Emre Can somehow went unpunished by referee Anthony Taylor, but Barkley was rightfully booked later in the first half after rolling his studs down Dejan Lovren's ankle.

Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho celebrates scoring his side's second goal against Everton at Anfield on Saturday.

Jagielka headed on, Ashley Williams challenged Coutinho inside the six-yard box and the ball broke loose for a gleeful Pennington to pounce in front of the Kop.

Liverpool hired a private jet to bring Coutinho and fellow Brazil worldwide Firmino back after their country's win over Paraguay in midweek and will feel the move was worth it after the forward returned to form in style. The little Brazilian avoided a tackle by defender Idrissa Gueye, cut inside to his right foot and unleashed a rocket into the top right corner, leaving Blues goalkeeper Joel Robles rooted to his spot.

"The boys did everything", Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp told Sky Sports after extending his 100% record in Merseyside derbies.

But big games are often defined by the creative players raising their team to a higher level, taking opportunities when they arise; that is where this derby was won and lost.
