The chairman of the House Oversight Committee announced Wednesday he wouldn't seek re-election and in the process re-ignited rumors of a run for Utah's governorship in 2020.

"After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018", he wrote. "I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins", he said in a statement (and a Trumpian one at that, to declare that you're not running, but would have won if you had).

During the 2016 campaign, Chaffetz made headlines after rescinding his support for Trump following the release of a tape depicting Trump using sexually aggressive language and then providing his endorsement again as the election neared. Chaffetz told NPR's Morning Edition in February that his committee was concerned with possible mishandling of classified information when Trump was apparently briefed on a North Korean missile test at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida while dining with the Japanese prime minister.

They also emphasized "the vital importance" of North Korea "immediately showing honest commitment to denuclearization". US Ambassador Nikki Haley separately stressed that the onus was on North Korea to prevent an escalation.

Chaffetz announced Wednesday that he would not run for re-election next year for a sixth term in Congress.

"I just didn't ever think I would need to make that sort of a decision this soon, so that is surprising", she said.
