Opinion polls suggest Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party is up to 20 percentage points ahead of Labour ahead of the June 8 election.

"We will be setting out our policies in the manifesto when we publish it tomorrow", May told a news conference.

The Conservatives said bringing them back into public ownership, which would require a future Labour government to compensate existing shareholders, would add £14bn to the national debt in one year alone.

"Whether that breakthrough can happen, we'll wait and see".

Labour is defending its plans to exert state control over key utilities amid uncertainty over what the final price tag will be and how it will be paid for.

She insisted a majority of Scots are in favour of this, pointing to the decision to reject independence in 2014 and the vote to remain in the European Union previous year as opposition to Tory plans for a hard Brexit. "These are made up numbers based on a shambolic manifesto with a £58 billion black hole at its heart".

Messages attacking Labour or Jeremy Corbyn still proved to be the most popular for the Conservatives.

The party has insisted its plans are fully costed - raising taxes on big business and higher earners by £48 billion to pay for its programme to increase spending on education, health and other public services.
