Capitals replace Holtby in goal for 3rd period of Game 2

Sidney Crosby scored two goals in 52 seconds, Nick Bonino had the victor in the third period and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series on Thursday night at Washington. The Capitals eventually tied the game at two and controlled the play in the third period.

The Penguins returned to home ice in their Eastern Conference semifinal with a 2-0 lead and a surprising shot at a sweep. Holtby was pulled from the game after the second period.

The Senators captain beat fellow Swede Henrik Lundqvist from just above the goal line.

Among the hundreds of decisions and 41 saves he made against the Ottawa Senators, the New York Rangers goaltender knew all anyone wanted to know was how that one insane goal went in.

I know, I know, I know. On Thursday night, instead of resting during a television timeout with just over four minutes left in Game 1 of the Penguins' second-round playoff series against the Washington Capitals, Fleury was bouncing buoyantly, coiling and uncoiling his legs, as springy as ever.

Game 2 is Saturday night.

Capitals coach Barry Trotz knows that in chasing matchups sometimes "you allow the visiting coach to control your bench". The Penguins have other winger options (although they may have one or two fewer, depending on Hornqvist and Tom Kuhnhackl's statuses) and Scott Wilson could certainly fill in for a game if it means getting Sheary's head right for the rest of the way.

Pageau scored again 2:54 into the second OT, snapping in a shot during a 2-on-1 rush alongside Tommy Wingels.

Grubauer stopped six of eight shots. They entered the Stanley Cup Playoffs after they won their second straight Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's top regular-season team.

Moments later Backstrom scored on Ovechkin's rebound at 3:44, but Pittsburgh made it 5-2 at 5:31.

On Saturday, after Holtby gave up three goals on nine shots in the second period, Trotz sent out Philipp Grubauer for the final period, but the backup did not distinguish himself, allowing goals on the second and fourth shots he faced. "Marc obviously made a couple of big stops for us there", Penguins coach Mike Sullivan told reporters post-game.

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Jean-Gabriel Pageau might not have seen the goal that capped his "legendary game" for the Ottawa Senators.

"We've got to find a way to put a whole game together", Crosby said.

"He was fantastic", center Derek Stepan said.

Can't say this one makes a lot of sense on the surface. His next two outings left something to be desired, one a win and the next a loss, but when the Penguins punched their ticket to the second round, Fleury had come through with four wins, a.933 SP and 2.52 goals-against average. The Penguins are a much stronger team with the return of veteran wing Chris Kunitz and Hagelin, whose speed could make it even more hard on the Capitals.

"Sometimes depending on the situations it's nearly the road team that dictates how the game is played because just the guys they put on the ice in certain faceoffs, and then the other team has to respond to that", Maple Leafs forward James van Riemsdyk said. "That's our goalie. He's done that". We've got to find some goals for him, too. "We've done that. It's well known". The over/under total for the game is listed at 5.5 goals.

Penguins forward Carl Hagelin, who had been out with a lower body injury, played for the first time since March 10.

"Flower was great for us and he kept us in it", Kessel said. "He's special like that", Kessel said. "He's a game-changer for us, and so when he didn't change the game, I just looked to change the mojo there a little bit, that's all".
