Detroit police say the death of rocker Chris Cornell, the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, is being investigated as a possible suicide. The talented Wood struggled with heroin and cocaine addictions, and eventually died at the age of 24.

Besides Soundgarden, Cornell founded the early grunge band Temple of the Dog and also sang with Audioslave - a supergroup with members of Rage Against the Machine in which Cornell took a leftist political slant. Their one, self-titled, album was certified platinum.

With his powerful, almost four-octave vocal range, Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s grunge movement. "On the last tour that we were on together, he was sort of very quiet".

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, but reunited in 2010. The singer, 52, took his own life after he performed a concert in Detroit on May 17.

The group's defining moment was a 2005 concert in Cuba, which at the time was billed as the country's first outdoor rock concert by an American band.
