Cornell first rose to stardom almost three decades ago as the lead vocalist of the Seattle-based grunge rock band Soundgarden.
"Cornell, the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, had appeared upbeat on his Twitter feed before Wednesday's show, posting a picture of the outside of the Fox Theatre in Detroit where they were playing with the caption: "#Detroit finally back to Rock City!
Soundgarden predated both grunge pioneers Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but it wasn't an overnight success. While Soundgarden got their start with label Sub Pop in the late 80s, 1994s studio album Superunknown made the band a household name.
Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page tweeted: "RIP Chris Cornell".
The Detroit Free Press reported that Detroit police social media manager Dontae Freeman said Cornell was found dead in a hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel with "a band around his neck". The family friend forced open the hotel room door, discovering Cornell on the bathroom floor.

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, but reunited in 2010. The singer, 52, took his own life after he performed a concert in Detroit on May 17.
The group's defining moment was a 2005 concert in Cuba, which at the time was billed as the country's first outdoor rock concert by an American band.

Cornell is survived by and his wife, Vicky Karayiannis, their kids Toni, 12, and Christopher, 11 and his daughter Lillian, who is nearly 17, from a previous marriage.
