According to divorce papers filed Monday by the father of kidnapped 15-year-old student Elizabeth Thomas, the girl was physically abused by her mother for months before her parents separated in November 2015.

Tad Cummins, 50, told authorities that he was glad the manhunt was finally over, even though the federal and state sexual assault and kidnapping charges he faces could land him in prison for years.

Authorities say Cummins "planned and executed an audacious scheme", ultimately wanting to take Thomas to Mexico "and beyond for his own purposes".

The federal charge carries a 10 year minimum sentence and $250,000 fine if Cummins is convicted.

He was detained as a flight risk and will be transported to Tennessee "as soon as possible", a U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman said.

Federal Defender Benjamin Galloway was appointed as the defendant's counsel while in the Eastern District of California.

When Thomas first went missing with her armed former teacher, police expressed deep concern over "his intentions for her". Authorities said he planned to head to Mexico.

Authorities now said Cummins went to extreme measures to stay hidden with the girl.

Cummins left Tennessee because he was anxious about an investigation into his relationship with the girl, the court documents said.

The high school freshman also left her dog behind, Danielle said, and was very close to her younger sister Rebecca - to the point where the girl would call her "mommy".

The 15-year-old is suffering from panic attacks and is jittery after returning to her family following her abduction, her father said during an interview with "Primetime Justice" on CNN. "Obviously, we are really trying not to press her, because it's really traumatic for her to remember all of these things", she said. "The Criminal Complaint details a person who abused a sacred position of public trust as a school teacher so that he could pursue an improper sexual relationship with a juvenile victim who was legally unable to consent to such a relationship". The images showed Cummins had altered his hair to appear darker and the girl's hair may have changed to red.
