Israel to withhold $1M in funding after UNESCO vote

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry, who sees east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, declared the resolution a "victory for worldwide law".

Tel Aviv - Israel showed off its new F-35 stealth fighter jets recently delivered from the United States on Tuesday as part of an air show marking its annual Independence Day celebrations. "But my goal is to have no votes in UNESCO on Israel".

"The UNESCO's decision also highlights the need for a historic and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, so both countries can live in peace and security as neighbours", Minister of State for Media Affairs Mohammad Momani told The Jordan Times Wednesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will withhold $1 million in payments to the United Nations following a resolution adopted by its cultural agency that he says diminishes Jewish ties to Jerusalem.

"Any action taken by Israel, the occupying power, to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the city of Jerusalem (al-Quds) are illegal and therefore null and void and have no validity whatsoever", it said.

Late past year, UNESCO passed a series of resolutions which attempted to erase the connection of the Jewish people to the holy places in Jerusalem and to present those places as holy to Muslims only, Arutz Sheva reported.

"Yesterday, UNESCO again passed a delusional resolution regarding Israel's status in Jerusalem, the capital of the Jewish People for 3,000 years", Netanyahu said, adding, "I very much appreciate the across-the-board unity of nearly all political parties in rejecting this absurd decision".

Israel's Tourism Minister Yariv Levin said on Israeli television last week that May 22 is one of the dates being discussed for Trump's visit, but added the final decision lies with the White House.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) has passed yet another critical resolution on Jerusalem, prompting a backlash from Israel but celebration from Palestinians. "More countries opposed this resolution than previous year and fewer countries supported it".

The resolution is reportedly drafted with the help of Germany, which also led efforts for the vote's timing.

Most European countries abstained, while Greece, the UK, Italy and Lithuania voted against.

Citing ongoing Israeli settlement expansion in East Jerusalem, Qanou called on the Muslim world and the global community to recognize and practice the terms of the resolution. UNESCO tries to deny the fact that Jerusalem is a Jewish city, therefore, "we deny UNESCO", he said.
