May promises boost to workers' rights

"Today's ridiculous claims are yet more evidence that this election is a choice between a Tory party that fails working people and a Labour Party that will stand up for working people and deliver a better, fairer Britain".

Listing 11 commitments, May said she would increase the "national living wage" in line with median earnings, give new protections to "gig" economy workers and offer a new statutory right for workers to receive information about major decisions in companies, in keeping with the rights of shareholders.

Mrs May, who is trying to position herself as the politician on the side of working people, will commit to increasing the National Living Wage - now £7.50 an hour - in line with average earnings until 2022.

This means that the national living wage will be £8.20 in 2020 as opposed to the promise of £9 per hour under Osborne.

She would also include new rights for those who have to leave work to care for family members, or experience the death of a child, those who want to train and protections for those suffering mental health problems.

Trump's team had already planned to have Trump pay a visit to the wall, but on his own rather than as an official diplomatic act. At this stage, he will work out of the US Embassy in Tel Aviv and will live in the ambassador's residence in Herzliya.

"Already there are those on her benches itching to scrap basic protections, like the working time directive, which keep workers and the public safe but are decried as needless red tape by many hard right Tories".

"The Conservatives tried to ban workers from striking and were blocked by the Liberal Democrats in government", said the former business secretary who clashed with Number 10 over workers' rights in the coalition years.

"It's clear they aren't the party of workers' rights and that you can't trust them to care about you and your family".
