Trump delays decision on Paris climate accord

A German government spokesman says trade surpluses like the one that's provoking Donald Trump's ire are the result of market factors and are "neither good nor bad".

The G-7 leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, on Friday also discussed climate and trade.

President Donald Trump said that he would make a decision next week on whether the U.S. would commit to the 2015 Paris Agreement.

A source at the Group of Seven summit says the seven wealthy democracies have reached a deal to give the Trump administration time to tell them whether the United States plans to stay in the Paris climate agreement. "And he wants to clearly hear what the European leaders have to say".

Still, Trump hailed the trip a success as he arrived to the G-7 summit in Sicily Friday, the final stop of his maiden global trip, a grueling nine-day, five-stop marathon.

"The whole discussion on the topic of climate was very hard, not to say very unsatisfactory" Merkel said, as the two-day G7 summit of some of the world's wealthiest nations in the seaside town of Taormina, Sicily, drew to a close. But Cohn said neither would the sanctions be curtailed, as Moscow hopes.

"His views are evolving, he came here to learn", Cohn said.

His announcement came hours after the other six members of the G7, a group of some of the world's wealthiest nations, voted to stick to the agreement, which was struck by almost 200 nations and ratified past year, the Associated Press reported. A novice in worldwide affairs, Trump has been surprisingly candid about the impact his conversations with world leaders have had in shaping his views on numerous issues.

But Gentiloni also stressed that "there is an atmosphere of direct and honest discussion which translates into points of agreement on the major issues: from Syria to Libya and on to the issues of global trade, on which we are still working".

According to German media reports, Trump also condemned Germany for "very bad" trade policies in a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, signalling he might take steps to limit sales of German cars in the United States.

Previous reporting has said other members of Trump's orbit are also focuses of the investigation, but the reports Thursday evening were the first to name a current White House official.

The other six nations in the Group of Seven agreed to stick with their commitment to implement the 2015 Paris deal that aims to rein in greenhouse gas emissions to slow down global warming. The president said recent terrorist attacks in Manchester, England and Egypt underscored the need for the U.S.to "defeat terrorism and protect civilization". After the summit, the president will address American troops on an Italian base before departing for home.

Also not yet on the mutual agenda: a news conference. But Cohn indicated earlier Friday that the president was growing more attuned to the European stance on the issue.

The G7 leaders have agreed to keep fighting protectionism, a win for the six countries that had been pushing U.S. President Donald Trump to come around to their view of free trade.

Mrs Merkel told reporters: "The entire discussion about climate was very hard, if not to say very unsatisfying".

And the White House said G7 leaders had a "very robust" conversation before agreeing a final communique which stated the "strong commitment" of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom to the 2015 Agreement, but noted that the USA was "not in a position to join the consensus on these topics".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters aboard Air Force One Wednesday that the president would make his decision whether to exit the treaty upon his return to the U.S.
