Trump says he's 'very close' to naming a new FBI director

Lieberman was among four candidates Trump interviewed at the White House this week.

Lieberman retired from the Senate in 2013.

According to Politico, senior officials in the Trump administration have told sources in the last 12 hours that Lieberman is Trump's top choice to replace former FBI Directory James Comey.

Joe Lieberman endorsed Howard Dean over John Kerry in the 2004 presidential primary.

Other candidates included acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, former Oklahoma Gov.

Keating, a Republican, served as the 25th governor of Oklahoma from 1995 to 2003.

The president's tweets drew little reaction from fellow Republicans, who instead joined Democrats in heaping praise on Mueller, a longtime respected lawman who served under George W. Bush and Barack Obama, preceding Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The search comes following Trump's abrupt firing of James Comey last week.

Meanwhile, the FBI continues its investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, even though no evidence has emerged to date.

Several other candidates have withdrawn from consideration, including Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC and Sen. John Cornyn and New York Judge Michael Garcia, who both withdrew their names.
