UK Lib Dems put Brexit at center of manifesto

The Liberal Democrats have pledged to financially support cutting-edge grid and storage technologies as part of a comprehensive clean energy plan in its manifesto. "After all, who needs Ukip if the Government is doing what they want anyway?"

The 95-page manifesto - titled Change Britain's Future - contains a raft of spending commitments funded through taxation.

Among the proposals for the Green Transport Act are a ban on the sale of new diesel cars and small vans by 2025, a scrappage scheme for older diesel vehicles and extending low-emission zones to 10 more cities across the country.

The Lib Dem manifesto also included a raft of new policies and pledges to young people, promising to restore housing benefit for 18 to 21-year-olds and help new and first-time buyers get on the housing ladder.

The manifesto will commit to investing nearly £7bn in schools and colleges, doubling the number of businesses that take apprenticeships, tripling the early years pupil premium and extending free school meals to all primary school students. We aim to cut waste, increase recovery, reuse and recycling and move towards the so-called "circular economy" in which resource use, waste and pollution are minimised and product lifetimes are extended.

Elsewhere on the general election campaign trail, Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson visited a nursery school to highlight fresh efforts to boost literacy and numeracy standards. Its official manifesto launch will take place later on Wednesday.
