Suresh Prabhu said, "Indian Railways started third party cleanliness index of stations past year and railways have accomplished a significant improvement in cleanliness at stations".
He said the biggest challenge for cleanliness on platforms were visitors and passengers. Quality Control of India attached to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion conducted the survey in 407 railways stations (including 75 AI category and 332 A category stations). On Wednesday, Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu released the third-party audit report on the station cleanliness. Visakhapatnam Railway Station is followed closely by Secunderabad Railway Station. This survey was commissioned by the director of environment and housekeeping management of the Railway Board.
In A category, Khammam came second and Ahmedabad third.

Launching the ranking list, Prabhu said, "I hope the ranking will help inculcate the habit of healthy competition among railway stations".
He said that Vishakhapatnam has emerged as the victor in Cleanliness Index by securing Ist position in A1 category, Beas has emerged as Ist victor in "A" category station. Ahmedanagar station was ranked at 3rd position.

The criteria involved in judging the cleanliness were clean tracks, dustbins and clean toilets to name a few. The survey was carried out in 407 stations.
A1 stations are those where the annual passenger earning is more than Rs 50 crore.
About 8,000 stations are divided by Railways into seven categories - A1, A, B, C, D, E and F based on their annual passenger revenue. Patna is placed 28 among the A1 stations with an overall ranking of 91 with a score of 791. Separate rankings were given for A1 and A category stations, the minister said. All suburban stations are in the C category, while all halts are in the F category. A survey will now be conducted by Railways over the cleanliness of trains.
