Watch Derek Jeter Give Heartfelt Speech During Jersey Retirement Ceremony

Jeter becomes the 22nd Yankee to have his number retired, and his No. 2 will now be immortalized in Yankee Stadium's Monument Park alongside Babe Ruth's number 3 and Lou Gehrig's number 4.

Jeter, who played his final season in 2014 after a 20-year career in NY, became the 22nd player in franchise history to have his number retired.

If Yankees fans were nervous about the unveiling of Jeter's plaque, you can certainly understand why.

Before Jeter threw the first pitch against the Houston Astros, he took a few moments to address the crowd during the dedication ceremony in honor of his almost-two-decade career with the legendary franchise (he retired in 2014).

"I came over at the trade deadline with the Reds [in 2003], and that was the only team I had played with to that point". They would tally one more run on a homer off of the bat of Brett Gardner, and Adam Warren would earn the win for the Yankees. "When I played with him, Mr. Torre always had to be the guy who had to tell Derek he had a day off, and the guy Derek would get mad at, so I never had to deal with that as a player!" Whether or not that matters is an open question, but it wouldn't necessarily shock me if Derek Jeter is the last baseball player who attains his level of fame and celebrity for a long, long time.

In addition to getting his jersey enshrined in Yankees' history, Jeter received a number of gifts.

The New York Yankees have placed closer Aroldis Chapman on the 10-day disabled list with rotator cuff inflammation in his left shoulder.

Both teams wore special Mother's Day uniforms, undershirts and caps with pink elements, and many players used pink bats. "If there's something to report, I'll let you know".

"He just had to work really hard the first two innings, and it cost him", Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez had his second straight two-hit game and started a disputed double play, lifting St. Louis over the Chicago Cubs 5-3.

Jeter was once a young, touted player - he immediately made his mark in the baseball world.
