Two girls, ages 7 and 13, were wounded on Friday afternoon in a shooting at an end-of-the-year school picnic outside an elementary school on the far South Side, according to police, fire officials and reports.

Chicago police Supt. Eddie Johnson said former students attempted to join the school's end of the year picnic around 1:30 p.m., but security officers who recognized them refused to let them in. They were both taken to the hospital.

As they were leaving, shots were fired at them but missed, hitting the two girls instead. It's, it's-you know, it just, it angers me that these little children can not grow up in a neighborhood and not think that gunfire is the norm. The 13-year-old was being prepared for surgery, according to the girl's sister, Daytonna Hart, who was at the hospital.
