On Monday night, Wildfire Today reported, the fire was 4,400 acres and had spread to 12,000 by 2:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters are establishing a perimeter around Mayer, a town of 1,400 residents.

Fire officials say the fire sparked 14 miles south of Prescott on Saturday. Several other communities are on pre-evacuation notice including Orme School, Dewey-Humboldt, Blue Hills, Walker, Potato Patch, Mountain Union, and Mountain Pine Acres.

It is burning in an area north and west of the junction of Senator Highway and County Road 177.

People in several other smaller residential areas were also evacuated as the fire continued its progression.

Roads have been blocked and communication has been disrupted, with officials saying that the fire is especially hard to fight because it is roaring through trees and brush which have grown untouched for almost 40 years.

On Tuesday, the danger to Mayer was highlighted by a C-130 airtanker's slurry drops between Mayer and the advancing front of the fire.

The Goodwin Fire has burned 940 acres in the Bradshaw Ranger District of the Prescott National Forest, according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

The fire was 1 percent contained as of Tuesday night.

Officials said strong winds helped fuel the fire burning mostly through chaparral and heavy grass that have been untouched for almost 40 years.
