A wildfire is surging out of control near vineyards on California's Central Coast.

Sizzling heat is exacerbating the fire risks out West, where tired crews have been battling blazes in Utah, Nevada, Oregon and California.

Authorities ordered more evacuations at the fire that has torched more than 67 square miles (174 square kilometers) in preparation for winds and low humidity that could push fire growth north after calmer weather kept its growth in check over the weekend. Mayer has about 1,400 residents. Residents will be alerted by the city if more measures are added.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the ban would be implemented starting 72 hours after being cleared by courts. Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito Jr. and Neil Gorsuch would have allowed the ban to go forward without the limitations.

Utah state Rep. Mike Noel said Tuesday he wants to use the fire near the ski town of Brian Head and a popular fishing lake to highlight the imbalance of power afforded environmental groups under previous presidents and to ease bureaucratic and legal blockades for logging companies. He said the next 24 hours will be critical and that the state will provide whatever support is necessary.

Local fire spokeswoman Elayn Briggs said at least 13 homes and eight outbuildings have been demolished since the blaze began but no serious injuries have been reported. It's also in steep, rugged terrain that makes it hard for firefighters to reach.

In addition, a U.S. Forest Service researcher said logging probably would not have made a big difference in the high-altitude fire that is sending embers from tree-to-tree over long distances - normal for the ecosystem.

Still, asked whether Assad had called off any such strike completely, Mattis said, "I think you better ask Assad about that". The U.S. says it saw active preparations at Syria's Shayrat airfield for using such weapons.

The fire has burned over 28 square miles (73 square kilometers).

The nation's largest active fire is raging across Southern Utah near the ski resort town of Brian Head.

A half-square-mile (1.4 sq. kilometer) wildfire erupted and quickly surged in hot, dry, windy weather near Highland in San Bernardino County.

The fire has reached into remote areas of Dixie National Forest, where heavy fuel is continuing to feed it. Briggs said when it emerges from there, firefighters hope to get a better handle on it as it moves into lighter sagebrush.

CAL FIRE said on June 22 that firefighters have responded to 1,878 wildfires, burning over 19,000 acres, since January 1, representing a threefold increase compared with the same time previous year.
