Cosby's lawyers try to paint accuser as opportunist

Andrea Constand broke 12 years of silence Tuesday, publicly testifying at Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

They had sworn that once confronted in court, Constand's claims would collapse under the weight of their own inconsistencies.

"He had never disclosed to me that he had affection for me...that he was interested in a romantic interaction with me", Constand said. She says Cosby fondled her breasts and genitals after drugging her at his suburban Philadelphia home in January 2004.

Thirty years old at the time, Constand was director of women's basketball at Temple University, where Cosby sat on the board of trustees.

"I was shocked by what she had said". "I realized I was mistaken".

Agrusa struggled during her questioning of Constand, often getting dates, locations and details of Constand's statements to police wrong. Her testimony came a day after another woman who has accused Cosby of sex assault, Kelly Johnson, told the jury that he had given her an unidentified pill before sexually assaulting her.

"I wish I had recorded it", she testified.

Prosecutors gave no sign of who their remaining witnesses might be, though they in early filings they suggested they intend to call expert witnesses on the treatment of sexual abuse victims and forensic toxicology.

On the three-minute call, Cosby could be heard trying to smooth things over with Gianna Constand, the mother of Andrea Constand, who has accused the comedian of drugging and sexually assaulting her.

Defense lawyer Angela Agrusa, who used a projection screen to scroll through highlighted phone records and question Constand about each one, took particular note of a call on Valentine's Day.

The defense lawyer sought to show that Constand changed her mind about the date of the alleged assault.

Gianna Constand told the jury that she was distraught to learn what Cosby had done to her daughter.

But Assistant District Attorney Kristen Feden suggested Andrea Constand's statements to investigators regarding the alleged incident were consistent.

Constand has told jurors how her professional relationship with the Temple University trustee evolved into a friendship.

All were made from Constand's Temple-issued cell phone.

"I apologise to Andrea and I apologise to you mommy", she quoted Cosby as having said in reply. I doubt that I could stay as calm under cross-examination as Constand has been, wearing pale blue and white, her hair in a halo of tight brown curls that extended her six-foot frame.

Aside from the timing of Ms Constand's meetings with Cosby, the defence also raised questions about their nature. He then apologized to Andrea and her mother, Gianna Constand said. "As it went on - and it was very very frequent - she would scream in her sleep or she would wake up in a sweat".

When Gianna Constand heard about her daughter's accusation of sexual assault against Bill Cosby in early 2005, she quickly confronted the comedian during an nearly two-hour phone call. She did not see Cosby before or after the show, she said, but she gave Cosby's aides a gift from her brother.

"He said, 'I feel bad telling you this, I sound like a perverted person, I sound like a pervert, '" Gianna said.

The 44-year-old testified on Tuesday that she saw Cosby as a "mentor", and considered him "somewhat of an older figure".
