India and France to deepen cooperation to tackle terrorism

Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to work together on terrorism and climate change at their first bilateral meeting in Paris on Saturday.

NY [U.S.A.], June 4 (ANI): The newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron's administration took a jibe at President Donald Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord by releasing a modified version of a White House video.

India is one of the four largest emitters of carbon dioxide, alongside China, the United States and the European Union, and one of 195 countries that signed the accord which sets stringent standards to restrict carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases.

The Frenchman has led Europe's defence of the Paris accord in the face of Trump's climate scepticism.

"I will be travelling to India towards the end of this year and convene a meeting of the world solar alliance", Macron said, referring to the International Solar Alliance - an alliance of more than 120 countries.

An enthusiastic Modi said the French centrist's election had "encouraged the whole world".

India's Prime Minister and the new French President have said they will co-operate in the fight against climate change, after meeting for the first time in Russian Federation.

Earlier, Macron said France, which has seen some of the worst terror attacks in recent times, would stand by India in its fight against terrorism.

Speaking at a joint Press event, the two leaders voiced concern over the growing threat of terrorism worldwide. He said, "France fully supports India's fight against terrorism".

"Terrorism is the biggest challenge facing the world today".

In announcing his decision, Trump said he was "elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris". Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's special envoy for cities and climate change.

He said France wants more Indian students to come to France for education and similarly French students going to India.

Modi thanked Macron for accepting his invitation to visit India.

Macron said France is also committed to taking initiatives in tapping solar energy as part of harnessing renewable energy.

Before his departure, Modi laid a wreath at the Arc de Triomphe in honor of Indian soldiers who fought in France during World War I.

France and India have launched the Global Solar Alliance aimed at developing solar energy and making it accessible to all.

With the deal due to expire at the end of June, one participant said the group had opted for a nine-month extension. The cuts were extended by OPEC and a dozen independent oil exporters, including Russian Federation .

Arriving at the presidential palace the 66-year-old Indian nationalist hugged 39-year-old Macron, in scenes contrasting with Macron's clenched-jawed, white-knuckle handshake with Trump in Brussels last week.
