In recent weeks, US-led coalition's warplanes struck pro-Assad government forces to prevent them advancing from the Al-Tanf garrison in southeastern Syria at a spot where the country's borders meet Iraq and Jordan.
The Pentagon said a US F-15 aircraft, flying over Syrian territory, fired on the drone after it displayed hostile intent and advanced on coalition forces.
The U.S. -led coalition said the location where the drone was destroyed was close to where another "pro-regime" drone, which intelligence sources had also identified as an Iranian Shahed 129 UAV, was shot down on June 8 after allegedly dropping bombs near coalition forces.
Pentagon spokesperson Navy Capt. Jeff Davis said the U.S.is not aware of who was manning the drone, but noted that Iran has sold the Shaheed-129 drone to the Syrian government under Bashar al-Assad and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah.
"The absence of a civilian-led United States strategy in Syria and the narrow U.S. military focus on ISIS will continue to provide an open invite for the pro-Assad regime coalition to extend and escalate", Cafarella said.

As well as announcing that US-led coalition warplanes would be tracked, Russia's ministry of defence suspended a hotline set up to avoid clashes between USA and Russian aircraft over Syria.
That's a big problem, and Russian Federation felt obliged, the day after that incident, to warn that United States warplanes operating in much of Syria would be treated as hostile military targets by their substantial air defense units inside Syria.
Meanwhile, officials said that Moscow further intensified its military efforts in the last few days to achieve small deals between Washington and Tehran and help contain any escalation.
Tuesday's incident also comes less than 2 days after the USA shot down a Syrian fighter jet after it allegedly attacked us -backed fighters near Tabqah.

"The U.S. must decide if it wants to continue to actively support its proxies in the Syria civil war".
"As a precautionary measure, Australian Defense Force [ADF] strike operations into Syria have temporarily ceased", the Defense Ministry statement said.
Tuesday's suspension was taken to allow coalition forces to assess the operational risk of air strikes, defence said, as US-backed forces seek to take back the city of Raqqa.
It was shot down near Tanf, an outpost of the US-led coalition.
"There has been neither a Security Council decision, nor a request from the official authorities of the Syrian Arab Republic as a sovereign state", Russian Federation s Interfax news reported. Russian Federation said it will now treat any aircraft or drones as threats if they operate in any areas west of Euphrates.
