Three seasoned journalists at CNN have resigned after the network retracted a story investigating links between a Russian investment fund and an American financier and adviser to President Donald Trump.

The CNN story in question was removed from CNN.com last week and replaced with an editor's note that explained: "On June 22, 2017, CNN.com published a story connecting Anthony Scaramucci with investigations into the Russian Direct Investment Fund".

CNN said the story didn't meet its editorial standards.

Eric Lichtblau, who just joined CNN three months ago as an editor; and Lex Haris, a CNN veteran who has headed CNN Investigates since January, all left the company Monday.

The retracted story had said the Senate investigations committee was looking into a January 16 discussion between Scaramucci and Kirill Dmitriev, whose Russian Direct Investment Fund guides investments by US entities in Russia. After one of the subjects of the piece, Trump ally Anthony Scaramucci, threatened a lawsuit, it was retracted and an apology was issued.
