Nebraska soccer association apologizes to girl

A girls' soccer tournament reportedly disqualified a team because an 8-year-old player "looks like a boy".

Mili Hernandez's team had advanced to the tournament's final day Sunday when it was suddenly disqualified. The team made it to the finals of a tournament this past weekend in nearby Springfield.

Hernandez even showed tournament officials his daughter's health insurance card in an effort to prove her gender, but they refused to accept it.

Mili's story has since gone viral, even grabbing the attention of American soccer legend Mia Hamm.

"They only did it because I look like a boy", Mili told WOWT 6 News.

While the Springfield Soccer Club organizers have already offered the prospect of the Cachorros appealing the ruling that barred Hernandez, some of the most famous names in women's soccer have stepped forward to support the young Omaha starlet.

"They only did it because I look like a boy", Hernandez told WOWT News in a televised interview.

But the tournament's officials denied that Mili was kicked out because of her short haircut, saying a typo on the roster that listed her as a boy was the reason for the disqualification.

She added, "A lot of professional athletes have short hair..."

"Mili, don't EVER let anyone tell you that you aren't flawless just as you are. i won championships with short hair", Wambach tweeted late on Monday.

Mili's father said the experience was upsetting for his daughter and that she had cried after finding out she and her team couldn't play.

Mili Hernandez prefers her short haircut. Hamm has invited Hernandez to one of her soccer camps.

In a separate statement by the Nebraska State Soccer Association - which oversees the soccer league - they claimed the organization was not involved in the tournament organizers' decision.
