Scalise in 'Much More Difficult' Shape Than First Thought, Trump Says

A gunman opened fire on the Republican baseball team's practice before Thursday's annual charity baseball game, critically wounding Scalise, R-La., and injuring three other people as horrified legislators and staffers scrambled for cover amid a barrage of bullets.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said before an event on apprenticeships at the White House. "It's been. he's in some trouble".

"An injury to the colon, an injury to the intestine, we'll go ahead and fix those or cut those segments of bowel out", Hunt explained.

Trump began the morning by calling those leading the Justice Department's Russian Federation election meddling probe "very bad and conflicted people", then contended the shooting that also injured several Capitol Police officers, a lobbyist and a congressional aide has "brought some unity to this divided country".

The motive for the shooting remained unclear but authorities were zeroing in on the life of James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from IL, in the months and weeks before Wednesday morning's shooting. He had been living out of his van in the Alexandria area in recent months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

Scalise's office had initially stated Wednesday that the Congressman was in stable condition, stating prior to his first surgery that "the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone". On Thursday, he underwent more surgery.

The shooting prompted talk of improving security for lawmakers, most of whom are unaccompanied by officers in their normal day-to-day pursuits.

The suspect's brother said Hodgkinson was a critic of Mr Trump who was upset over last year's election and intended on bringing his protest to Washington. "Hopefully Matt will be OK".
