Scalise's condition upgraded to serious: He 'is speaking with his loved ones'

U.S. Representative Steve Scalise's condition has improved but remained critical on Thursday, a day after a man who had expressed anger toward President Donald Trump opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a baseball practice.

"I feel a lot more optimistic than I do two or three days ago", Sava said. He was shot in the hip in the Wednesday morning incident and the bullet fractured bones and injured internal organs, causing severe bleeding.

Sava said doctors will not attempt to remove what are likely to be hundreds of bullet fragments from Scalise's body, saying the risk of such a procedure typically outweighs the potential benefits. The hospital says Scalise "will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time".

More on this as it develops.

Scalise, 51, is among four people shot by a gunman at a House Republican baseball practice Wednesday in the Washington suburbs.
