Second arrest made in investigation into death of Ellen Higginbottom

Tributes have been paid to a teenager who died after being brutally attacked near her college in Wigan.

The 18-year-old's family reported her missing on Friday evening after she failed to return home after college.

An autopsy revealed that she had been killed by "multiple wounds to the neck", according to BBC News.

Her friend Katie Hatton wrote on Facebook: "Absolutely heartbreaking that this horror had to happen to such a lovely and caring young girl, always smiling and making me laugh in psychology".

In a statement a Winstanley College spokesman said: "We are deeply shocked and mourning the loss of a wonderful young woman, Ellen Higginbottom. R.I.P. Ellen". The teen's friends pleaded with the public via social media to get in contact with the family if they knew anything about her whereabouts. "You will be missed xxx".

So far, the police have said that there was also another report of two younger women who were being followed by two odd men on Thursday in the same area.

"The post-mortem has now taken place and we have a clearer picture of what may have happened to Ellen, but we are still piecing together her exact movements in the lead-up to her death".
