At least three Afghan policemen were killed and two wounded when an American military aircraft opened fire during an operation in southern Afghanistan, officials said on Saturday.

According to the wire service, the Pentagon says the US military is "aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan".

Achin has been the site of heavy fighting in recent months as U.S. Special Operations forces - including elite Army Rangers and Green Berets - have been working alongside Afghan commandos to rout the Islamic State from the area.

This is when at least one US service member remains on watch while Afghan and USA military forces are on patrol, dine together or are sleeping.

An official statement by the Pentagon confirmed that three soldiers were killed and another injured in the incident, which appears to be an insider attack. ON my way here I was informed that United States service members were killed and wounded in an attack in Afghanistan.

The killings have bred fierce mistrust between local and foreign forces even as the rate of such incidents has dropped in recent years. The statement provided no further details of the incident but said it was under investigation. Although once relatively common, "green-on-blue" attacks have decreased following stricter security measures and the sharp decline in foreign troops in the country.

The number of insider attacks spiked in 2012 but have since become less common, a reduction attributed to new security procedures and better vetting of Afghan security forces.

Both Afghan and American officials said they were investigating the incident.
