US Open notebook: Tommy Fleetwood prevents total meltdown on No. 18

"U.S. Opens aren't supposed to be played under par!" they'll scream right before telling the neighbor kids to get off their lawns.

All it took was a 9-under 63, the lowest round to par in a major long known as the toughest test in golf.

His eagle came on the 667-yard 18th, as Thomas hit a 330-yard drive, then knocked his 3-wood to 8 feet and made the putt.

He made the eagle to get his name in the record book Saturday.

Harman was at 12-under 204 and still only had a one-shot lead, with Rickie Fowler two shots behind.

Justin Thomas breaking records at US Open
He still built a six-shot lead through 36 holes, despite hitting his tee shot into the ocean on the 18th hole and salvaging bogey. If I wake up with the same feelings tomorrow, I'm going to have a chance. "I wasn't out of position all day until that point".

"You don't get many rounds at the U.S. Open that are stress-free", Fowler said. There were 18 rounds in the 60s on Saturday. With no fewer than 34 players under par, unheard of in a US Open where par has so often been king, Harman will feel like the outlaw pursued by a posse as he chases a breakthrough Major title.

The final round of the 2017 U.S. Open concludes on Sunday.

Taking the sting out of not having eight of the world's top 12 players around for the weekend, Justin Thomas shot a record-breaking 63 on Saturday.

Thomas, decked out in fluorescent pink trousers, was on the move quickly with a birdie-birdie start and had an even hotter finish to his front nine, carding birdies on four-of-five closing holes, including the last three to move to seven-under. He and the rest of the field still trail 30-year-old Brian Harman, who shot 67 and leads Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood by one shot through 54 holes at gettable, rain-softened Erin Hills. It dropped him two shots off the lead and, to add insult to injury, it will still count as a three-putt.

"Doing it all night is not going to help and not make any difference, let's just concentrate on each day as it comes", he said. "I hit it far enough", Harman joked after the round during his Fox Sports interview. I'm confident I'm prepared for whatever happens, good or bad.

Trump Might Not 'Terminate' DACA After All
The program, which was announced by President Barack Obama in 2014, never took effect because it was blocked in a federal court. But immigration activists had remained anxious that the administration might still eliminate the program.

With the entire field separated by just eight shots after the cut fell at one over, 2015 victor Jordan Spieth had hoped to get himself into contention, but struggled to a 76.

Thomas finished in style, and it had nothing to do with his hot pink trousers.

Thomas poured that in to become the 29th player with a 63 in a major championship. "I played a lot", he said of his football career. About all that might save Erin Hills from another onslaught was a forecast for the strongest wind of the week.

"It means I'm a part of history". This is the best I've struck the ball in a long time, and my short game is pretty good and I've been putting pretty good. "Obviously I have no idea what [Sunday] holds, but I'm more motivated by the way I'm striking the ball".

The low-scoring sets up a wide open final Sunday, with the world's top three ranked players - No.1 Dustin Johnson, No.2 Rory McIlroy and No.3 Jason Day - all missing the cut on Friday.

When it was clear he had nothing going in the second round, he was simply trying to stay out of the way. When the cut came out on Friday, Erin Hills was shaping up as the Conspicuous by Their Absence Open.
