Virginia voters picked their parties' nominees for governor, lieutenant governor

Gov. Ralph Northam won the Democratic nomination in the closely watched race for governor Tuesday, defeating a more liberal insurgent challenger in a contest to be one of the party's standard-bearers against President Donald Trump.

On the Republican side, Stewart has tried to make his support of Trump a top issue in the primary while Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, has largely tried to keep Trump at arm's length. He energized many new-to-politics voters who oppose Trump but was ultimately unable to expand the universe of Democratic primary voters enough to counter Northam's advantages.

Perriello, who saw basically no support from the Democratic party, was forced to get endorsements from liberal leaders out of state, including Sanders (I., Vt.) and Sen.

In a race that remained close throughout Tuesday evening, Ed Gillespie captured the Republican primary for the Virginia governor's race while Ralph Northam clinched the Democratic spot.

Virginia is one of only two states electing new governors this year, and the contest could serve as a preview to 2018's midterm elections.

Mittiga was part of a surge in first-time candidates Democrats have seen for House races this year, fueled by postelection angst.

"We can not allow Virginia Republicans to roll back rights for women and spread Donald Trump's hateful and risky agenda across the Commonwealth", Platt said.

"We have changed the conversation here in Virginia and lifted the voices of those who have been left out of the political conservation for too long", Mr. Perriello said at a party in Falls Church.

"I'm shocked", said Nancy Russell, who was Hanover County chairwoman when Gillespie ran for Senate in 2014.

"I am not going to overanalyze that statement, but I like it", said 80-year-old Jim Hensen, a retired Air Force master sergeant who backed Mr. Northam.

He said people have been asking him if he would continue McAuliffe's policies if elected governor.

Northam is lieutenant governor of Virginia and a pediatric neurologist at the Children's Specialty Group in Norfolk.

But public anger has been swelling, with furious residents heckling May and storming the local authority headquarters on Friday. Some 19 patients are still being treated in hospital, of whom 10 are in a critical condition, the National Health Service said.

It took several more hours for a call to be made in the unexpectedly tight GOP race, with Gillespie besting Stewart by less than five thousand votes.

Virginia voters cast their ballots in the Democratic primary Tuesday, choosing their candidates for the gubernatorial, lieutenant gubernatorial and House of Delegates races. Gillespie rarely mentioned Trump and aired commercials that showed he was an adviser to former President George W. Bush.

The Democrats have made elections in Virginia and Georgia a referendum on President Trump.

On the Republican side, Gillespie, a moderate Washington insider, is trying to fend off under-funded but spirited campaigns from Wagner and Stewart, an avid Trump supporter.

But it's unclear how much Stewart supporters will rally behind Gillespie. "I think he stands for the values that Virginians want at this point". He's accused Gillespie of trying to mislead voters with unrealistic promises to cut taxes as governor, while calling for a gas tax increase himself to pay for transportation projects.

Vogel beat fellow state Sen. Northam raised almost $6.5 million in the primary compared to Perriello's $4 million haul, which helped the lieutenant governor saturate Washington-area television stations with ads over the last few weeks. Northam had pushed his campaign further to the left and has described Trump as a narcissistic maniac - while Perriello instead attempted to reach out to Trump voters by selling a message of economic populism framed through a progressive perspective.
