7.7-magnitude quake hits off Russia: US scientists


The quake struck in the northern Pacific Ocean between the tip of the Aleutian Islands and Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.

It hit at 9.34am AEST and there was no threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories, the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said.

The epicenter of the magnitude-7.7 quake was located about 123 miles (199 km) east-southeast of Nikol'skoye, Russia, according to the USGS.

The natural disaster occurred at 7:34 p.m. EDT approximately 124 miles east-southeast of Nikol'skoye, Russia, off the coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, at a depth of 7.3 miles.
