Dead, Many Feared Trapped In Mumbai Building Collapse

A 40-year old four-storey building collapsed in the Indian city of Mumbai yesterday, killing at least eight people with more than 20 feared trapped, fire and police officials said.

The chief minister said the Mumbai civic body is also coming up with a procedure under which building permissions will be issued without delay.

The building's owner was detained by police on Tuesday, and is due to appear at a local court on Wednesday accused of endangering life and causing grievous hurt.

Most residents left the building after noticing pieces of concrete falling, PTI said.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap, who was earlier being held responsible for Ghatkopar building collapse, has now been booked for culpable homicide.

The state government has made a decision to rework norms for the redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings in the city, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said in the assembly on Wednesday. Shiv Sena has claimed said Shitap was not in any way associated with the party even as his wife was given a ticket, the paper added.
