HP keeps up strong PC sales amid slumping worldwide shipments

In the Q2 report, HP's PC shipments were 12.6 million with a market share of 20.8 percent. Meanwhile IDC said that combined desktop, notebook and workstation shipments were down 3.3 per cent to 60.5 million units for Q2, the lowest number recorded since 2007. While the overall market remains in a slump, HP managed to improve its year-over-year sales and keep its position as the top PC vendor for the second quarter in a row.

The figures for Q2 show that 61.1 million PCs were shipped globally, which is down 4.3% on the same quarter previous year. And while analyst firms IDC and Gartner both recorded sales slowdowns in the market, the reality was still somewhat better than the bleak predictions made by both firms earlier this year. Apple's PC market share was 6.7% a year ago, but now, it has inched up to 6.9%. Dell placed third, with Apple and Asus behind it in fourth and fifth places respectively.

This slump, Gartner claims, is to blame on higher PC prices, which in turn is to blame on a global shortage of components.

"The approach to higher component costs varied by vendor".

But despite losing its top spot in terms of sales, a spokesperson for Gartner said that Lenovo won't be too concerned as it makes "a strategic shift from unit share gains to margin protection". Asus accounted for 6.6% of the market with 4 million units, while Acer held s 6.3% share with 3.9 million units sold.

IDC also released its PC shipment estimates on Wednesday, and the numbers were comparatively more positive than Gartner's. All three U.S. PC companies, HP, Dell and Apple showed growth for the quarter while Lenovo and Asus fell into negative territory as our chart below proves out. However, according to research firm IDC, Lenovo had already been surpassed by HP during the first quarter of this year, despite Gartner giving completely different rankings.

They claim strong evidence points to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who is loyal to the Kremlin, was behind the killing. Zaur Dadayev, the man convicted of fatally shooting Nemtsov, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

"Despite recent issues wrought by component shortages and its effect on system prices, we expect the momentum of commercial market replacements will contribute to eventual market growth", he said.
